Hyperpigmentation Treatments by

Dr. Justin Evans

Hyperpigmentation treatments are designed to reduce hyperpigmentation, age spots, and other discolorations caused by sun damage, hormonal changes, or aging.

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterised by darkened patches or spots that can affect individuals of all skin types. Dr. Justin understands the impact hyperpigmentation can have on your confidence and self-esteem and is dedicated to providing innovative and effective treatments, including Laser Therapy and Intense Pulse Light (IPL) to help you achieve a smoother, more even complexion.

Understanding Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color, is produced in certain areas of the skin. Common causes include sun exposure, age,  hormonal changes, and certain medications. Whether you’re dealing with sun spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, there is a treatment option available to you.

Our Treatments

1. Laser Therapy

Laser therapy involves the use of focused light to target and break down melanin in the skin. This method offers several benefits:

  • Precision: Lasers can accurately target specific areas without affecting surrounding tissue.
  • Quick Recovery: Many patients can resume normal activities shortly after treatment.
  • Long-lasting Results: With a proper skincare regimen, the results can be permanent.

How It Works: Using advanced laser technology we can safely penetrate the skin’s surface and treat the underlying cause of hyperpigmentation. The treatment targetes melanin producing cells, allowing the body to absorb and remove the melanin. This also stimulates collagen production, leading to improved skin texture and tone over time.

2. Intense Pulse Light (IPL)

IPL is a non-invasive treatment that uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths to target pigmentation while minimising damage to the surrounding skin. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Versatility: IPL can treat various skin conditions, including redness, sun damage, and uneven skin tone.
  • Minimal Downtime: Most patients experience only mild redness post-treatment.
  • Quick Sessions: Treatments typically take 15-30 minutes, making it easy to fit into your schedule.

How It Works: During IPL treatment, the light energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the pigmented areas, breaking them down for natural elimination by the body. This method also encourages skin renewal, resulting in a brighter and more youthful appearance.

Performed exclusively by Dr. Justin Evans, these treatments use advanced laser technology to target pigmentation at its source, restoring a brighter, more even complexion.

Each session typically lasts 15 – 30 minutes, depending on the size and number of treatment areas.

All treatments are individually tailored to the patient’s needs, concerns and desired outcomes. As a result, prices vary from patient to patient, condition to condition. Come in for your individual assessment to discuss your treatment needs and applicable pricing.

Some clients notice improvements after the first session. However, most achieve optimal results after 2–4 sessions spaced 2 – 4 weeks apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does hyperpigmentation treatment work?

Lasers emit a very specific light wavelength which is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hyperpigmented skin.

The absorbed energy causes destruction of the melanin containing cell clusters that make up the hyperpigmentation. These fragments are then over time, naturally cleared by the body, resulting in pigment removal and lightening of the treated area. This creates a more even skin tone.

When will I see results?

You will first start to notice a reduction in pigment within the first 3- 4 weeks of treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies based on the severity of the pigmentation. Typically between 3 – 6 sessions may be required.

What does a hyperpigmentation treatment involve?

Dr. Evans begins with a thorough consultation and skin assessment. Topical anaesthetics agents can be applied to the skin between 45 – 60 minutes prior to the procedure to minimise discomfort during the treatment.

The skin is prepared with gentle cleansing and eye protection applied. The laser device is then gently moved across the pigmented areas evenly or specific targeting areas depending on the treatment goal.

What skin concerns does this treatment address?

Hyperpigmentation treatments are ideal for addressing:

Does it hurt and is there any downtime?

The procedure is generally well-tolerated, with clients describing a mild tingling sensation. There may be slight redness or swelling post-treatment, which typically resolves within a few hours to a few days. There’s minimal downtime, and you can resume normal activities shortly after.

Are there side effects?

Temporary redness, swelling, or minor darkening of treated areas may occur, but these effects usually subside within a few days.

What precautions should I take pre and post treatment?

  • Pre-treatment: Avoid sun exposure, tanning, and exfoliating products for at least one week before your session.
  • Post-treatment: Use SPF 30+ daily, avoid direct sun exposure, and follow Dr. Evans’ aftercare instructions for optimal healing.
